How to: Conserving Data Usage on Android Device

Data usage refers to the amount of data uploaded or downloaded by your device during a given period. Android mobile phones are increasingly becoming popular device for browsing the internet, for chat, social networking or simply killing the time on internet.
To help you conserve data usage on your Android device, follow the steps below. By the way, to access the data management tools in Android 4.0, you need to first go to Settings and then choose Data Usage. Once in the Data Usage settings, there are a number of things you can do.
  •  Turn Background Data off
    • From the home screen, press Settings
    • Tap on Accounts & Sync
    • Uncheck Backgroud Data 
    • Tap on the Account and uncheck box next to Sync
  • Restrict data to the foreground
    • Press Settings
    • Tap on Data Usage
    • Check the box next to Set Mobile Data Limit
    • Tap on the app you want to restrict on the list
    • Check the box for Restrict Backgroud Data
  • Delete unused widgets and lengthen intervals between updates
    • Press and hold on widget and drag into the Remove icon to delete
    • Open widget you want to keep
    • Press Menu
    • Tap on Settings
    • Look for an option with the lines of interval or refresh and set it to be longer

Note Restricting an apps data will cause notifications not to work. Make sure you do this only to the apps that have no business running in the background.

  • Don’t load images in the browser
    • Open web browser
    • Press Menu
    • Press Settings
    • Tap on Bandwidth Management
    • Uncheck Load Images box 
  • Often use Wi-Fi connections 

-This is one of the most important. If you know you’ll be sitting at the same place for an extended period and that place happens to have an available Wi-Fi access point, make an effort to connect nearby Wi-Fi networks. These things use up a lot more data than anything else, so its important you do them on Wi-Fi if you can.
